Tickets go on sale April 5th!

Mark your calendars for REIMAGINE, Celebrating 30 Years, featuring live music composed and performed by Graham Reynolds for piano, violin and cello at The Long Center, Rollins Theater. Artistic Director, Andrea Ariel reunites with long-time collaborator and celebrated composer Graham Reynolds to present an evening of compelling dance theatre that reimagines and weaves past repertoire with new creations in celebration of our 30+ years.

After postponing this performance for two years due to COVID, we are thrilled to finally create it for you!

Audiences will experience the dynamic expanse of Ariel’s choreography over her 32-year history of work in Austin, TX. The performance brings together acclaimed works from past repertoire with new choreography all created to scores for piano and strings composed and performed by Graham Reynolds with Alexis Buffum on violin and Ilia De la Rosa on cello.

Graham Reynolds called “Evocative & enigmatic” (The Seattle Times) and his music “Beautiful and raucous…” (Vogue Magazine) began working with AADT in 1999 and over 14 years collaborated on 12 productions. The music for this show includes pieces from Reynolds albums The Difference Engine: A Triple Concert, a collaboration with Tosca String Quartet, and an early piece from Golden Arm Trio’s Tick-Tock Club. New works have been created to music originally composed by Reynolds for AADT’s shows Five Two Ten in 2008 and The Geometry of Proximity in 2011.

“Over all these years we were both developing our work, and there are many threads of Graham’s compositions that are part of my work during that time” Ariel says. “I thought it would be interesting to reimagine older works and create new ones to a selection of scores that resonated with these connections.”

Ariel’s dances move from rhythmic athleticism to animated humor, from poetic images to flowing patterns each reflecting the poignant beauty of our humanness and our connections to each other. REIMAGINE, will be performed by the dynamic talents of AADT ensemble members Luis Ordaz Gutierrez, Sade Jones, Clay Moore, Whitney O’Baugh, Ceci Proeger, and Sunny (Jun) Shen.

Andrea Ariel has probably made dance in Austin longer than you may have lived here. If you’ve lived here, then you most likely have experienced her work at some point. For over three decades, Andrea Ariel Dance Theatre (AADT) has taken on some considerably larger-than-life subjects. This concert is no exception. After postponing the show for two seasons the company has turned 32. Six weeks from the original performance dates, the reality of COVID struck. The ensemble regathered on Zoom and the Artistic Director, Andrea Ariel, collaborated with the dancers to re-create several of the works virtually, bringing forward the choreography through editing.

“When I watch the virtual re-creations we made, I feel the depth of where we were during that first year” Ariel says. “As I have come back to the creative process in-person with the dancers two years later, a deeper meaning of the work emerged. It reflects our experience of the changes we have gone through. This collection of dances draws together threads that find relevance in our current times.”
